Not on OUR Watch!

Preventing & Addressing Student Substance Use

Join us to “get schooled” on the research-based risks of current substance use trends, and proven systemic approaches for preventing and intervening in use. The drugs our students are exposed to are becoming increasingly stronger, more appealing, available, easier to conceal, and laced with unexpected substances. We are seeing an epic rise in adolescent substance-related mental health concerns, cognitive damages, medical emergencies, and overdose deaths, often playing out on our campuses. We will also outline the components of effective comprehensive drug education programs, proven prevention, early intervention and discipline approaches, and the role each staff member can play in helping

students stay informed and safe in today’s drug landscape. THIS CAN BE ADAPTED SPECIFICALLY FOR COUNSELING/STUDENT SERVICES STAFF including counseling tools & approaches for working with students using substances.

75-90 mins.

DeMISTifying Vaping

Understanding, Preventing & Addressing

Student Vaping

Youth vaping of nicotine and THC has exploded on our campuses in recent years, with increasingly destructive consequences for students and staff. Students are disengaging from classes and experiencing negative medical, cognitive and mental health impacts, while teachers and administrators waste time, energy and resources on discipline efforts and liability risks. Shifting these dangerous trends will take comprehensive efforts in elementary through high school, and school staff collaborating with each other and parents. We will review the proven risks of youth nicotine and THC vaping, and explore what role every staff member can play in school-wide prevention and intervention efforts. This includes discussion about policies and discipline responses showing positive impacts. THIS CAN BE ADAPTED SPECIFICALLY FOR COUNSELING/STUDENT SERVICES STAFF including counseling tools & approaches for working with students using substances.

60-120 mins

Addiction-Proofing Our Students

In an Addictive World

We are seeing addictive behaviors increasing in students, and developing progressively younger, from substance use to self-harm, to all things involving screens. Learn why ALL students are "at risk" for these self-destructive behaviors, based on their developing brains, normal developmental needs, and the increasingly addictive world they are swimming in. We will discuss how all school staff - from teachers to bus drivers to cafeteria staff - can play a powerful role in fortifying students resilience and protective factors for steering healthily through the pressures to engage in addictive and risky behaviors. This includes how we can be particularly supportive of kids with higher risk, and  intervening early in potential self-destructiveness. We will talk about how fostering addiction-resistance is an all-hands-on-deck approach that involves collaborating with each other across a school system, and with parents.

60-90 minutes.

Catching Them Upstream

Counseling Interventions with Students Using Substances

(FOR COUNSELING STAFF) Youth substance use trends are becoming increasingly addictive and dangerous, wreaking havoc on students’ cognitive, physical, and mental health, engagement in school, and future potential. Research tells us middle and high schoolers who use are at much higher risk than adults of developing Use Disorders, and more destructive consequences. School Counselors can play an impactful role in intervening early in student use through individual, group, and classroom settings. We also need artful skills to get through to kids who are swimming in pro-use influences and misinformation. We will focus on how to talk impactfully about drugs with our students, collaborate across departments, partner with parents and use Motivational Interviewing skills and screening tools to inspire young users to reflect on and change their use.
